We now return to the eerily beautiful miniature world in the sequel, Little Nightmares 2, where we experience a new story with an equally new main character. Playing this puzzle platformer, it's still all about using skill and brains to survive in this gloomy, often colorless and bizarre world. One of 2021's first major releases, the highly promising Little Nightmares 2 is a creepy adventure centered around the cute duo Mono and Six.
Set in a dark forest, the journey doesn't take long for the first challenges in the form of deep pitfalls and nasty traps. As soon as the adventure starts, in the first chapter Wilderness, we are taken into a beautifully designed forest by Tarsier Studios, a forest that doesn't lack the desired horror despite great lighting effects and an almost fairytale-like design.
At the end of a well-done tutorial, we meet the raincoat-wearing Six (the main character from the first part), and she joins our mission. As it happens, Six continues to be a key character in the plot and our loyal companion. However, Six is not playable, but functions as an AI-controlled co-op partner.
The new battle system causes frustration as well: Even though it's nice to create new corridors for yourself with tools like an axe, the conflicts are just as exhausting, in which you can only successfully defend yourself with good timing, but are usually caught off guard. On the one hand, this is due to the many deadly traps, which are well hidden, and on the other hand, the scary and murderous hunter. However, the puzzles and riddles, while creative and varied, are for the most part very simple.
Clearly, Little Nightmares 2 thrives on the dense atmosphere, the pretty style and the many details that are hidden in the game world. Whilst Little Nightmares 2 convinces with a lot of creativity in terms of monster and world design, clever innovations in gameplay and an intense atmosphere. There is background information about the characters and environments in almost every corner. Those who have already enjoyed titles like Limbo, Inside and its predecessor will be equally captivated by Little Nightmares 2.
